In yoga philosophy and Ayurveda, 3 major states of consciousness govern our world:
- Tamas, meaning ineratia and ignorance
- Rajas, meaning activity and passion
- Sattva, meaning purity and balance
These elements are in every aspect of our lives. The aim of our lives is to move from Tamas towards Satva using Rajas as an engine.
To make our lives easier we can eat foods that are satvic. Here is a list of satvic foods as mentioned in the ancient vedas and by Paramahansa Yogananda:
- Most fruits and vegetables that can be eaten raw.
- Vegetable fats like olive oil, avocado, coconut, nuts and nut butters, peanut butter
- Carbohydrates: brown rice, oats, raw wheat (soaked for 48 hours), green wheat (aka freekeh)
- Vegetable proteins: dried peas, beans and other legumes; gluten products
- Dairy products: milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, clabbered milk, channa, ricotta, cottage cheese
- Sweetner: honey and dates
