Dr. John Beaulieu – Documentary

Dr. John Beaulieu – The Man and The Sound Healer

The inspiration for BioSonic Repatterning™ began in an anechoic chamber at New York University—a completely soundproof environment designed to eliminate external noise, allowing only the sounds generated by the human body to be heard.

Dr. John Beaulieu was inspired by the experience of renowned composer and philosopher John Cage, who famously entered an anechoic chamber expecting complete silence. Instead, Cage reported hearing two distinct sounds: one high-pitched and one low-pitched. An engineer explained that the higher tone was the activity of his nervous system, while the lower tone was the sound of his blood circulating through his body.

Fascinated by this discovery, Dr. Beaulieu embarked on his own exploration. Over the course of two years, he spent approximately 500 hours in an anechoic chamber, carefully listening to the subtle sounds within his own body.

As both a trained musician and researcher, he began recognizing patterns within the high-frequency sounds of his nervous system. Rather than hearing a single tone, he perceived multiple pitches and harmonic intervals. During one session, he brought two tuning forks into the chamber and struck them together. To his surprise, he experienced his nervous system resonating with the vibrations of the tuning forks.

That moment led to a profound realization: the human body responds to sound much like a finely tuned musical instrument. This insight became the foundation for what would later be developed as BioSonic Repatterning™, an approach that uses precise sound frequencies to promote balance, wellness, and personal transformation.

Professional Background

Dr. John Beaulieu’s career spans more than three decades, integrating the fields of music, psychology, natural medicine, and martial arts. His educational background includes degrees from Purdue University (B.A., 1970), Indiana University (M.S., Ph.D. studies, 1973), the International College of Naturopathic Medicine/Santa Fe College of Natural Healing (1977), and Westbrook University (Ph.D., 1994). He is a licensed psychotherapist in New York State, a Board-Certified Naturopathic Physician, and a Board-Certified Polarity Practitioner.

Dr. Beaulieu served as Supervisor of Activity Therapy at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York City and later as a Staff Therapist at Richmond State Psychiatric Hospital in Indiana. In these roles, he directed creative arts and recreational therapy programs while researching and developing innovative community transition programs for adult psychiatric patients. His clinical work also included specialization in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Following his hospital career, Dr. Beaulieu joined academia as an Associate Professor at the City University of New York and Fairleigh Dickinson University. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in activity therapy, counseling, psychology, and research methods, while also serving as a graduate thesis advisor. Additionally, he mentored students through Empire State College of New York, one of the nation’s pioneering accredited “universities without walls.”

Music and Creative Arts

A lifelong musician, Dr. Beaulieu began studying classical piano at the age of four. His formal education in music included mathematical composition with Iannis Xenakis, experimental composition with Franz Kamin, and Concrete Poetry at Indiana University.

During his years in New York City, he collaborated and performed with influential avant-garde artists including John Cage, Jackson Mac Low, and Charlotte Moorman. His musical compositions and poetry have been presented internationally and published through recordings, books, and musical scores.

Dr. Beaulieu’s martial arts journey began in his youth, earning black belts in both Karate and Judo. In 1973, he became a student of Grand Master Cheng Man-ch’ing, initiating decades of study in Tai Chi Chuan under distinguished teachers including Benjamin Lo, T.T. Liang, and William C.C. Chen.

He views martial arts as a practice for cultivating chi (life energy), an essential component of healing. This philosophy is deeply integrated into his teachings on BioSonics and Energy Medicine, where principles of movement, energy, and sound intersect.

Personal Life

Dr. Beaulieu lives and practices in Stone Ridge, New York, with his wife, Thea and kids. Outside his professional work, he enjoys golf and maintains a six-handicap, often taking time to relax on the course whenever possible.
