A Dutch startup is reimagining what concrete can be. Respyre, a spin‑off from research at TU Delft, has developed a bio‑receptive concrete system that allows moss to grow directly on building façades—no soil, irrigation, or maintenance required. With just rain and ambient humidity, blank gray walls can become lush, living surfaces that cool cities, clean the air, and support biodiversity.
A New Kind of Concrete Designed for Life
Respyre’s technology begins with a microporous, mineral‑rich concrete layer engineered to hold moisture and deliver nutrients. This substrate is made from up to 85% recycled materials, including rubble and reactivated cement, giving it a strong circular‑economy footprint.
A bio‑gel coating containing moss spores is applied on top. The gel provides adhesion, nutrients, and protection during early growth. Within about 12 weeks, moss colonizes the surface—either from the seeded spores or naturally occurring ones in the environment. Because moss anchors with rhizoids rather than roots, it doesn’t damage the structure beneath.
Pilot sites include Amsterdam’s Marineterrein and the Wageningen University campus. The company collaborates with TU Delft, AMS Institute, Wageningen University, and the Dutch government’s Circular Technology program.
Respyre’s moss‑infused concrete offers a compelling model for regenerative urban design. By turning inert surfaces into living ecosystems, the technology merges architecture with ecology—cleaning the air, cooling cities, supporting wildlife, and reconnecting people with nature.
As installations expand and research deepens, moss façades could become a standard tool for climate‑adaptive, low‑maintenance urban retrofits worldwide.
