Germany Turns Coal Pits Into Sparkling Lakes

Germany Turns Coal Pits Into Sparkling Lakes

In the 1980s, a satellite passing over central Germany would have seen vast open‑pit mines carved into the landscape, each one devoted to extracting lignite—also known as brown coal—for electricity production. Today, many of those once‑industrial sites look entirely different, having been transformed for new and unexpected uses.

Lignite extraction in central Germany began roughly 150 years ago, eventually making the country one of the world’s leading producers. Early surface mines in the 19th century were small and dug by hand, but as mining technology advanced, the pits expanded dramatically. Although lignite supplied essential power, the mining operations reshaped the environment on a massive scale. Roughly 1,770 square kilometers (680 square miles) of countryside were altered, affecting ecosystems, displacing communities, and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

By the 1990s, many of these mines began shutting down due to policy changes, growing public concern, and the emergence of alternative energy sources. After closures, miners, local officials, conservation groups, and water management specialists collaborated to repurpose the abandoned pits. Their solution was to flood them, creating new lakes that could support recreation, aquatic habitats, wildlife water sources, flood control, and other ecological functions. Water for these lakes typically came from nearby rivers, rising groundwater, or dewatering systems from still‑active mines. In total, more than 140 former lignite pits across central Germany have been converted into artificial “pit lakes.”
