Partnership with the Aimee Copeland Foundation puts rugged, motorized Action Trackchairs into the hands of visitors with mobility impairments — at no cost.
Georgians who have long watched friends and family disappear down a trailhead now have a way to follow them in. Through a partnership between the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Aimee Copeland Foundation, free all-terrain wheelchairs are available at seventeen state parks, historic sites, and wildlife areas across the state.
The vehicles, known as Action Trackchairs, replace traditional wheels with rugged tank-style treads, allowing them to roll over mud, water, sand, and snow that would stop a standard wheelchair cold. For visitors with mobility impairments, that means access to nature trails, fishing spots, and adaptive hunts that were previously out of reach.
“All-Terrain Georgia is the pride and joy of Aimee Copeland Foundation,” said Copeland. “It’s been a long time coming and we’re honored to offer this life-changing program to the community.”
A Sense of Freedom
State officials describe the chairs as more than a piece of equipment. They are designed with safety in mind and give riders the ability to hit the trails alongside family and friends — what the Department of Natural Resources calls “a sense of freedom that can be difficult to have in an everyday wheelchair.” The chairs are approved for hiking, hunting, fishing, and other outdoor education and recreational activities.
The program operates under the Department’s broader Outdoors Beyond Barriers initiative, which works to make Georgia’s public lands more accessible to people of all abilities.
How to Reserve a Chair
The chairs are free to use, but reservations are required, and first-time users must complete a brief certification process. Both are handled through the All-Terrain Georgia website, an initiative of the Aimee Copeland Foundation.
